Couger Chicks Bi-Annually in early April, the “clickety- clack” of Kalamazoos have been heard on the railway tracks in Cummins.

Onlookers get a glimpse of the sights and sounds of our railway heritage as these hand operated rail carts race down the dual railway tracks going through the centre of Cummins.

This unique event captures the imagination of spectators and tests the stamina of the competitors.

Whether you see The Gamblers, Netamazoos, Instant (Shed) Erections, the Cockaleechie Rattlers or the Bone Pumping Paramedics the atmosphere is friendly and “we’ll have a go!” attitude is there to enjoy. Even the local Ministers’ team, the God Squad, get in the act.

The Race tracks

The Cummins Kalamazoo utilizes the dual railway tracks through town. The rail link between Port Lincoln and the rest of Eyre Peninsula means that Cummins, at the junction of the East and West rail transport lines, plays a critical role as a major bulk grain-handling receival centre for the farming community of Lower Eyre Peninsula.

The trains operate daily through the town.

The Cummins Kalamazoo event demonstrates the endeavor, talents and sense of making your own fun that permeates many small communities. Cummins has worked persistently to turn around their fortunes after struggling to maintain services and economic viability.

Following the tradition of our agricultural pioneers and railway workers, in these contemporary times there is still an established belief in Community. We have the Community Hotel, a Community Library, Community Sports Complex, and now a Community Bank and a Community Caravan Park.

Winning the SA Community Event of 1999 was a fitting recognition of the Cummins Kalamazoo event and what we have achieved in our rural community.

One of the teams

A popular event The Kalamazoos, built to railway specifications, are marvels of engineering. Local “Mr. Fix-it”, Nick Laube, coordinated the “can-do” team which built the 2 Kalamazoos from a myriad of parts.

Now it’s a district enterprise and these locals act as “pit-crew” on race day to carefully maintain the machines to provide the competing teams with every chance of success.
