2008 Cummins Community Bank Kalamazoo Cancelled
At a meeting held on Thursday 25 October it was decided that the 2008 Cummins Kalamazoo Races be cancelled and to focus on supporting the Cummins Air Show scheduled for Sunday 6 April 2008.
This was the third Kalamazoo meeting held over the past two months. Each meeting has had very little support from the community. Without members of the community committing to help with the organisation the small steering committee could not do it.
It was a disappointing result as the Cummins community has been committed to keeping their town and district alive and healthy and putting Cummins on the map. The Kalamazoo Classic went a long way towards starting the process. The meeting felt that the Kalamazoo event has possibly run its course and it was time to look at a new direction to gain the community commitment.
Although the Kalamazoo event itself has been cancelled there were a number of exciting ideas that came from the meeting. These ideas will be discussed at a general meeting after the Cummins and District Enterprise Committee�s Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 27 November, at 8.00pm at the Cummins Hotel.
The Cummins World Championship Kalamazoo Classic was first held in 1998 and in 1999 won the Australia Day South Australian Community Event of the Year Award. Locals and visitors at the inaugural races were fascinated to watch the teams of five power their hand-operated railcars along the dual railway line which runs down the centre of Cummins township.
With subsequent Kalamazoo races held annually and with the opening of the Cummins Community Bendigo Bank, the community spirit and initiative of the community was rewarded again in 2002 when the Cummins & District Enterprise Committee were awarded both the National and State inaugural �Can Do Community Award� through the Department of Family and Community Services.
